What is a good bedding for a pet hedgehog?

I would prefer this to be answered by hedgehog owners only please. Ok I have a pet hedgehog but he doesn't really care for the beding he currently has. I was wondering if using dirt would work as a good substitute. I know it sounds kind of weird bur I would like to plant plants native to his natural environment that will not hurt him in his cage. Opinions?
