Did I react wrong when he said he bought me something?

So, my boyfriend has a lot of money and his parents buy him a lot of things (while my parents make me buy my own clothes and such, which i totally dont mind, i like it!! FREEDOM AND INDEPENDANCE! lol) so i was on the phone with my bf and he was like i bought you a shirt here is wat it looks like and he sent me a pic and it was like $40!!!!!! so, some backround info on me is tat i really dont feel comfortable for guys or girls pay things for me. i like to spend my own money on my self or others. i just feel really weird having someone pay something for me. if its like a snack or something fine! if its christmas or eastar or birthday, fine! but just no reason or like on a date, i feel weird and bad that they are spending THEIR own money!! Idk, i dont like my parents to spend a lot of money on me either. If it was like college okay but for clothes or something frivolous like that then i want to pay for it. so ANYWAY! he said he bought that for me and so i stupidly go "I really hope you didnt!" and then hes like why? and then i explained and then i had to go... but now as i look back, i was kind of rude and i didnt even say thank you!!! so.... how can i make it better and should i feel this way? and what should i have said?
